There have been 18 annual conferences throughout the state since 1989. This year our program is in Lubbock . Friday’s training portion will be held at the International Cultural Center on Texas Tech University 's campus. Saturday & Sunday portions will be held at the Holiday Inn Park Plaza.
This is a unique educational, interactive and hands-on training experience for individuals to gain valuable insight into laryngectomy rehab. The program provides a one of a kind opportunity for SLPs to interact and learn from laryngectomees and SLPs specializing in laryngectomy rehabilitation. Lecture topics cover the different methods of communication after a laryngectomy including the artificial larynx, esophageal speech, and tracheoesophageal puncture. Additional instruction will include such topics as swallowing, radiation, etc.
There is a 2 hour TEP Clinic Friday at Texas Tech Physician's Medical Pavilion which involves a live demonstration of sizing, placement and removal of the voice prosthesis. Saturday’s agenda provides voice training for laryngectomees, which allows attendees to enhance their therapeutic skills. Sunday includes breakout sessions which cover topics such as pre-operative counseling, reimbursement and how to implement therapy with the total laryngectomy patient.
Among our highly acclaimed guest speakers this year is Carla Gress, Sc.D., CCC-SLP, from Lynchburg , Virginia . Dr. Gress is a prominent contributor to the field of laryngectomy speech rehabilitation. In addition to presenting lectures, Dr. Gress will also be providing hands on instruction in laryngectomee rehabilitation techniques. Dr. Joehassin Cordero, an otolaryngologist from Lubbock specializing in head and neck cancer, will lecture on the medical aspect of laryngectomy, diagnosis and surgery on Friday morning.
We would be delighted if you would attend the conference and encourage your laryngectomee patients to participate in this outstanding educational experience. This conference is a great CEU opportunity for SLPs with 19 total hours of continuing education awarded at the end of the weekend.
