THE WHY AND HOW FOR PHONOLOGICAL REMEDIATION WITH PRESCHOOLERS IN A LITERACY BASED CLASSROOM

Vera Crow Richey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech
and Hearing Therapy and a Master of Science degree in Speech
Therapy and Psychology from East Texas State University,
Commerce. (Now known as Texas A&M University at
Commerce).
Vera has worked as a speech/language pathologist in Texas
public schools with all age populations. She has worked in
Temple ISD, Gainesville ISD and McKinney ISD. She has also
been a PPCD teacher, a resource teacher and a summer
supervisor for graduate students in a university distance learning
program.
In McKinney ISD, she was the founding speech pathologist and
served as coordinator for the Preschool Articulation Language
Services (P.A.L.S.) program. The establishment of the P.A.L.S.
program led to opportunities to present at numerous conferences,
including TSHA and ASHA. She has consulted with
districts regarding their speech and language therapy services
to preschoolers.
Joyce Skinner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech
Language Pathology and a Master of Science degree in
Communication Disorders from the University of Texas Dallas*
Callier Center for Communication Disorders.
Joyce has worked as a speech/language pathologist in
McKinney ISD for thirteen years, the last nine in the P.A.L.S.
program.
In McKinney ISD, she is the current coordinator for the
Preschool Articulation Language Services (P.A.L.S.) program.
She has presented at ASHA, TSHA, LouisianaSHA and numerous
Regional Education Centers in Texas.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The presentation will address an effective methodology of providing therapeutic services to
preschool students in the setting of a classroom environment that is natural for this population.
This literacy based approach remediates phonological pattern errors and at the same time
encourages emerging expressive language skills, facilitates morphology development and
develops phonemic awareness skills. Elements to involve parents as a partner in the progress of
their child will be addressed. Efficacy data collected will be presented that compares this
approach to traditional methodologies with the preschool population.
Instructional Level: Intermediate (Assumes general familiarity with the literature and professional practice within the areas covered).

This program is offered for 6.0 TSHA CEUs. This conference will meet the state licensure ethics requirement provided that the participant is
present for the entire duration of the presentation.

Feeding Support Group Meeting

Do You and Your Child Struggle at Mealtimes/ Feeding Times?

Join us to discuss problems and create positive solutions at the Feeding Support Group meeting for the Lubbock area.

What?: A group of area families and professionals collaborating to provide support and information for parents of infants and children who have feeding aversion/difficulties. This group is being created for families concerned about their child’s feeding behaviors and their effect on his/her development.

Who should attend?: Any person who has experience, concerns, or information regarding adequate feeding and nutrition for children birth – adolescence. Feel free to invite others who may be affected by struggles at mealtimes/feeding times.
